Dunn Field, North Trenton

Dunn Field, North Trenton
This is a Burg item because so many folks from the Burg
went here to see the Trenton Giants minor league baseball
team play, especially in the Jackie Robinson days.
The current Trenton team, the Trenton Thunder (Yankees AA)
does very well and has for many years at Waterfront Park,
showing that the Trenton area remains big for baseball.
Well, we played all summer in those days long ago:)

All within the shadow of my Grandparents home. The field was still there as part of Penn Fruit probably on of the first large super markets.

The signs? What was ice cold and served at the refreshment stand and who had that .35 cent lunch?

The fleet of Orange and black Tattersalls trucks was a common sight rumbling around town and every kid knew the Kearns Elk meant a great cream soda or root beer. Budny Tire, it was sad to see them finally close not all too long ago.

I will confess to using those two grumpy old guys who ran the tire shop by the second precent on Broad Street in the 60's??

The two grand hotels, Hildebrect and Stacy Trent .. all gone.

Thanks ... Skip

A few days ago my friend who had a far better memory for this part of town were talking about the old shops and things that were in the area and he reminded me of the Uncle Sam Diner that had a tall "Sam" that towered over Princeton Avenue. And right down the street was Fritz's Diner. I forgot that Princeton and Calhoun were probably the main road to Philly in those days.

I noted the Gino's tribute site you have up and that got us talking. It was Uncle Sam's and then Gino's. Me? I was a Pix guy, 5 for $1 and that would be right over the left fielders shoulder a bit later on.

Dunfield Auto Parts that still may be there is about all that is left of the memory.

Skip and Mack: Skip and I may have played baseball together, don't know. But our games were at the Penn Fruit field. Just think as kids we played on hallow ground.

Knapp's Cyclery occupies what was the last reminder of Dunn Field and is now in the Dunnfield Auto Parts building.

With the number of games played there and Joe only a year older we had to have played ball together. From 12 to 16 years old?

I lived about two blocks from Dunn Field. Willy Mays would cross the Brunswick circle to get to the field and would stop to play a little catch. It was alwase a great summer when we had the Giants to see.

I lived at 924 Lanning Ave. My father would tell me how he caught foul balls while sitting in a lawn chair in our back yard. I remember as a kid, when Penn Fruit acquired the property, the excavators digging the foundation for the Super Market, I used to ride my go-cart in the parking lot after the store closed at night.

My little league baseball coach, Len Matte, played with Willie on the Giants at Dunn.
Mr. Matte was a catcher and, so the story goes, taught Willie the famous underhand catch he was so famous for.
