Burg area folks before my Burg day may remember this.
This must have been a great place in its day.
I worked Downtown in the early 1980's, long after its
Glory Days. I remember Kresges, Blimpies, Dunhams,
Ginos (Which became Roy Rogers)...The "Commons" as
it was called was a bunch of Stores and Shops with
the street blocked off for traffic and used only for
walking. This idea did not work as folks like their
cars.

That Stone Bridge Route 29

Here is that Stone Bridge over Route 29 familiar to many
Burg folks. I always thought this was nice looking.
The right lane here takes you to the Calhoun Street
Bridge. Further up Rt 29 is that walking overpass to
Stacey Park which I have never seen anyone use.

This was in June of 1980 and for years they had this in
Mill Hill before it moved to a different place. June of
1980 was also my last month in Trenton Public Schools
thus these were momentous days for me.

I wish I had a picture of the big Noel sign at
Chambers Street and Hamilton Avenue but I have yet
to locate a good one. But Downtown Trenton was really
pretty here:)

I knew the Shakey Bridge from driving by on Route 29
and having Mom and Dad point it out to me. Its still
there today. This is an old picture of it for any of
the Burg area folks who remember old Stacey Park:)

Trenton City Hall

Trenton City Hall.
A very nice looking building both inside and out. I like
that swivel door entrance too. For most of my Burg days
it was either Art Holland or Carmen Armenti as Mayor but
I didnt follow city politics much. My Dad was on the
Historic Landmarks Commission and helped get some of those
cool lights and sidewalks in Mill Hill. I remember mostly
going to City Hall to get Birth Certificates or pay water
bills back in the day:)

Trenton Mayor Arthur "Art" Holland

Trenton Mayor Arthur "Art" Holland
I was born in 1962 so for most of my life in the Burg
Art Holland was the Mayor and that was that. It seemed
to folks of my era that he was there forever and would
stay there forever. My Dad knew Art as did so many of
the readers of this blog. This is not a political blog
as there are plenty of them on the net already and I
avoid politics here as I do not want to tiff half of
my readers..your views are your own and mine are mine.
This is about Burg Memory Lane. But Art Holland is an
exception to the rule as he was our Mayor all those
years. From what all the folks who knew him tell me
he was a good guy. I remember him most from the big
event of my Burg Day which involved him, the Water
Crisis of 1975. The Trenton Water Filtration Plant
broke down and he got it up and running again in a
few days. I remember we had to boil the water for baths
and had to drink water from trucks that came by
in the neighborhood (The National Guard?) . I
think we had flooding that year and the Civic Center
burned down. Folks were selling Tee Shirts with all
3 of the events on them. I forget what the caption
was on those shirts. I think the State Workers were
off a few days to save water. The bars I assume stayed
open so if you were thirsty in the Burg you at least
had them.. Do you remember?
