They made the rolls for Zips and their donuts under the
glass counter at Conrad Street and Anderson Street could
feed a family of four. God Bless The Old Burg :)

This was the 50th year for Barbero's Bakery in the Burg
in 1977 as it began in 1927. It was a favorite stop for
me in my Trenton High days long ago:)

Back when I was a kid, packaged bread was somewhat of a
novelty item. An everyday packaged bread was sold in most
of the Mom & Pop stores like Spike Thomas's at Genesee
and Hudson. I can't tell you who made it because there
was no printing on the wrapper. It cost about 10 cents
a loaf - sliced. It had to be baked locally becuase it
was fresh and tasty. We bought bread depending on what
we were eating that night. Spaghetti and meatballs
night meant we bought bread from Italian People's
Bakery or New Colonial Bakery. Chicken soup or tuna
salad needed rye bread from Blumenthal's Bakery on
South Broad Street. The best rye rolls were sold each
Saturday morning at Paramount Bakery on the corner of
Genessee Street and Beatty Street. Artie Heymen sold
hard crusted Jewish rye bread that came from Frey's
Bakery, out on East State Street. This went real
well with Hungarian specialties like szalona or
kolbasz and kraut or stuffed cabbage. All were
excellent and within walking distance of home. And
I haven't even gotten into pastries, donuts or old
style bagels. We were truly blessed! but today I
cannot eat any of them. ;-)

This picture is the Barbero Family in the 1970s. Barbero's
Bakery at the corner of Conrad and Anderson Streets made
great rolls and donuts. They made the rolls for Zips
Steakhouse among others. The donuts under the glass fed a
family of 4 lol. Loved this place especially in my Trenton
High days long ago:)

The building on the left of Landolfi's ( the one that doesn't
quite fit in with all the other row homes on Butler Street)
was actually an old farm house that was moved to that location
some time in the forties I believe. If you ever pass it on foot,
look at the alley along it's side, it still has the metal
carriage runners for a horse drawn carriage. The horses where
actually kept in the building to the rear of the house. I still
recall some old harnesses for the horses left there from the
previous owners as a kid. To this day I have an old leather
and metal bit I saved that was used in one of the horse's mouth.
My father owned the house as well as the bakery, and when I
moved the bakery to South Carolina I took with me the antique
wrought iron gate that was at the street end of the alley.
I grew up with that gate, and as a child always admired it's
beauty and craftsmanship . I just had to have a taste of my
old neighborhood to take with me. I still haven't found a
place to use it, but I'm sure i will !

How lucky were we as Burg area folks to be able to
have our choice of delicious cannoli and rolls and
Italian Bread and cookies and cakes and donuts
from a few Legendary Bakeries...Italian Peoples,
New Colonial, Barberos, Landolfi's, Paramount
Bakery, Priors Donuts & Kramers Bagels just to
name a few:)

Once upon a time this was The New Colonial Bakery. The
sign still says it is but it was purchased by Italian
People's Bakery years ago.
For the purposes of this blog its really cool they left
the exterior as it was:)

over their delicious "one donut feeds six" products under the
glass counter (especially in my Trenton High days).. and they

South Clinton Avenue was Prior's Bakery. Its donuts are
spoken of in Burg legend:)

One of the local Icon's like the CYO Sign or "That Thing
Above The Road" on South Clinton Avenue that always reminds
me that no matter where I am, the Burg is "home", forever.
