Hi Mack: We knew the Chiacchio family, owners of the
Hudson Beer Garden, very well. Their big feature when
they first opened were mussels. Latter on they expanned
their menu to include just about everything you would want
in Italian food. The mother and sister did most of the
cooking. Tommy,s younger brother, we called him "Snake",
was quite an amature boxer, in the golden gloves. It was
a big thing in those days.

Mack, My fondest memory of the Hudson Beer Garden were the
huge steak sandwiches and the Birch Beer on tap. This was
back in the late 1950s and early 60s.A carload of me and my
friends would stop late at night and get take out, including
a large cardboard container of the Birch Beer. Then bring the
sandwiches to my friend Johnny DeLellis' front porch on
Brunswick Ave. and have a feast until about two in the morning.
I once ate two of the steaks, really far too much for one
person. The great Birch Beer was not unlike the great on
tap Birch at Rossi's.

I see I'm not the only one with memories of those steak sandwiches!! It was in the 50's when I lived on Emery Avenue that my mother would crave one. I remember driving over with my dad to pick it up. I also remember the roll being the size of the Italian loaf from Peoples Bakery!
