Mac...Count me as one of the patrons of Guiseppe's place in the 20s and 30s when we called pizzas tomato pies. That was on Butler Street, he may have been somewhere else earlier. I'll never forget those 25 cents pies that were the best, I believe the only other topping at that time was anchoives.

Lord, Ralph, you are as old as dirt and dinosaurs (kidding), with anchovies as the only topping.

I'm early 60 and I don't get it with the pineapple & ham pizza, or even chicken. When I was a kid we hit Cashianni's across from the Brunswick theater and sausage was the big thing along with pepperoni (I like it but not on pie).

When I drew the line with this new fangled so called pizza was when they had hot dogs and french fries on it last year.

As the elder, I'll ask you if indeed there is a difference between pizza and tomato pie. I maintain that we have lost the quality over time, to canned product. I will stand corrected and the debate has gone back and forth on the Trenton Central forum on Classmates. Some say that one had the sauce on the top ... I need to look the next time I get down to DeLorenzo's (either one).

Thanks ... Skipper

Hi Ralph & Skip.
We still call em tomato pies.
I think the term pizzaria here is
only used because Papas is being
compared to all places nationawide
and the word Tomato Pie is really only a Trenton thing.
Anything other than anchoves
mushrooms or sausage on a tomato
pie was unusual back in the day.
Yes Tomato Pie has cheese first
then sauce. I just had Delorenzos
Hamilton Tomato Pie last week..
its a work of art:)

By accident once DeLorenzo on Hamilton brought out one with sausage, fresh garlic and black olives. I haven't been the same since. Mushrooms .. I knew there was something I was forgetting.
