400 Hudson Street, The Burg

400 Hudson Street, The Burg
The corner of Hudson Street and Elmer Street.
Once upon a time this was the Italo-American Grocery Company
according to my records. This picture was taken in midsummer
2009:)

when i was a kid, the italo-american grocery store freaked me out a bit because it was really dark inside. it seemed like it was lit by a single 40-watt bulb.

i guess the elderly couple that ran the store grew up in tough times and were frugal.

the store had old unfinished hardwood floors that amplified the sound of each footstep by a million times. you could not be inconspicious in the store.

i realized later that the store was not meant to cater to kids, but it provided all the grocery provisions that the local italian immigrants wanted or needed.

but, i did like the smell of the giant provolone and other cheeses that were hanging in the store.

the current store front is completely different that the original store.
