The Trenton Schroths Name

The Trenton Schroths Post 93 American Legion Baseball Team
Which plays at Wetzel Field in Villa Park was named after
Raymond Schroth.
I found this about Raymond Schroth on the net:

"Raymond Schroth was a hero of World War I, a platoon captain
who earned the Distinguished Service Cross and the French Croix
de Guerre, for valor in singlehandedly capturing a German machine
gun nest which had almost destroyed his platoon. With a revolver
which he knew was empty, he disarmed the Germans and marched
them back to the American lines. The Schroth's team, which
has dominated youth baseball in the area through the years,
is named for him."

"There's a Plaque at Wetzel Field that says this:
In Commemoration of Raymond Schroth
June 6, 1891 - July 7, 1977
Founder of American Legion Post NO. 93 Baseball League
For his work of Excellence and Dedication to the
Youth of Trenton, New Jersey"

The Schroths were NJ State Champions in:
1930,1931,1932,1933,1934,1935,1937,1938,1941,1943,1944,
1945,1946,1948,1949,1952,1955,1956,1957,1963 & 1976.
They were National Champions in 1948.
Our Ralph Lucarella played for them, his Brother Joseph
"Chuck" was on the 1948 National Championship Team.
Can you name any folks who were members of the team?

Actually, Mayor Holland was a teammate of my Father on a team called the Southards in the Twilight League, he never played on the Schroths. Years later he told my dad one of his regrets in life was not making the Schroths which goes to show what a big deal the Schroths were back then.

Did Tony Copolla play on the Schroths? He wore the uniform at Junior Four games, back in the 602.

Ralph Sr. Hi Mack: I know most of your readers are not my age but some may remember these Burg players on the Schroths. Tallone, Rossi, Filadore, the Zasso brothers. John Merlino, Don Pugliese and Don Palumbo played during my time. From South Trenton came the Micarski brothers and the great George (Shorty) Nemchick, who along with Al Cooper played on the U.S.A. soccer team in the Olimpics. Some may remember the great teams of 'Red' Smith at Trenton High and Mickey Lake at Trenton Catholic, both with many Burg players. My brother's team in 1948 also had their share of Burg players. He played on the Schroths for 2 years while his teamate Marty Devlin played 3 years. Most kids were fortunate to play 1 year.I could on and on writing about sports in the Burg. The Kent A.A. teams of the past were great. Tom Glover proably remembers. I also can comment on almost every photo you show on your blog. Thanks again, regards Ralph Sr.
