A Post from Ralph Lucarella Jr

Ralph Jr Said:

Yeah Mac-I'll look through some old photo albums though we don't
have that many from the old days. My father and my Uncle Lou took
alot of movies rather than pictures in the 30's, 40's and 50's.
My Uncle Lou made some classic home movies of the 1939 New York
World's Fair that we copied onto VHS. Also some film of Hamilton
Bowling Lanes in the 50's and I believe some car race that was held
at I think the Old Fairgrounds. I don't have many memories of New
Jersey myself since we moved to Florida in 1960 and I was born in
1955. We did however drive up to Trenton in 2007 to live the
memories and I took alot of pictures of our old houses and Wetzel
Field. My dad got a kick out of that because while we were at
Wetzel some members of the 2007 edition of the Schroths were
practicing and my Dad introduced himself as a member of the 1936
Team. I took a pic of the billboard commerating all the Schroths
Championships and kidded my Dad that the Schroths won every state
championship 1930 through 1938 but 1936, the year my Dad started
on the team at shortstop. It was a big deal making the Schroths
then as they were the only American Legion Team in the Trenton area
at the time and every kid in the area tried out for the team. As my
Father told you, Future Mayor Art Holland, Mayor of Trenton
1959-1966 and 1970-1989, was a teammate of his on one of his other
teams and he told my Dad many years later that one of his few
regrets in life was not making the Schroths. My Dad had to quit
school early in his Junior Year at Trenton High to help out his
family during the Depression, he never did play ball for Trenton
High, but still made the Schroths as their starting shortstop,
beating out not only the kids in the local leagues but all the
high school players as well. He must have been a good ballplayer
as my Uncle Chuck, (Dr.Joseph Lucarella), who was no slouch
himself as he was a member of the 1948 American Legion World
Series Schroths Champions, he stole home during the Series,
Captain of the Wake Forest University Baseball Team and
sponsered by the Yankees to play in a Summer League for
college players in New England before a car accident cut short
his baseball career, told me that my Dad was a better
ballplayer than him. I should interject now that my Dad
told me to mention as it would mean something to you that
he led the Twilight League in hitting.

Thank You Ralph Jr. These are great memories:)

There's a Plaque at Wetzel Field that says this:

In Commemoration of
Raymond Schroth
June 6, 1891 - July 7, 1977
Founder of American
Legion Post NO. 93 Baseball League
For his work of Excellence
and Dedication to the
Youth of Trenton, New Jersey
