Franklin Park Trenton

Franklin Park, Trenton. Where many kids from the surrounding
areas including the Burg went or played. William Street/Franklin
Street/Remsen Street. I remember my sisters friend winning
a talent contest in the early 70s with a touching rendition of
the Michael Jackson or Jackson 5 song (don't remember which)
"Ben". LOL.

Mack,

I don't believe you have mentioned Jim and Mary's yet. It was the little store across from Franklin Park on the corner of Woodland. We used to buy the candy fishes for 1 cent each. Jim would dress as Santa Claus every Christmas and stop at all the neighborhood houses on Christmas Eve.

I have fond memories of Franklin Park. Back in the day when we didn't have pools in our yards, the city would set up on in the playground. Also had arts and crafts activities in the summer - I made a lot of lanyard keychains and probably gum wrapper chains as well. Remember the traveling stage that would come for concerts? We all brought our folding chairs and blankets to see band like The Lamplighters and The Grease Band.

They also gave out food at times.
I remember the Orange Juice with the aluminum foil top:)

In the summer the City used to provide lunch plates to the kids playing in the park.

I lived on Brown St and spent most summer days playing baseball at Franklin Park in the early 50's. We wore a baseball diamond in the grass. Looks like the grass grew back. We also played quoits in the playground. I remember the owner of the store (he had a German accent) before Jim & Mary bought it slicing the end of his thumb off on the meat slicer.

I just remembered the man who sliced his thumb before it was Jim & Mary's was named Gus.
