To the left, down Broad towards Dye St was Vanek's Butcher shop..went to school with son Kenneth...then Sam's Tomatoe Pies.
Sam's LaRoma Pizza, coal oven pizza and a Kerns Red Cream soda. Had to wait sometimes, because Sam used to run across the street to Feketes for a shot and a beer. Also, Calcese Bridal across the street. Didn't everybody get their prom or wedding dresses there?

Barb: Thanks for mentioning Feketes. I was in the service in 1966 and coming home on leave at age 21, had my first official NJ bar drink at Feketes. Is it still there? There was a bar down the street called the Wooden Nickel near Apex Lumber, don't even know if Apex is there yet.
Sax..the name of the place was LaRoma Pizza. We all called it Sams, 'cause he was the owner. Joe Z..no more Feketes, no more Wooden Nickel, no more Trenton. My husband used to tend bar for Jules Fekete, spent many nights in there listening to Saxman and Peter.
Thanks for the info. You are right it was LaRoma, but we always called it Sam's. I guess the town in going downhill, I have not been there in 18 years.
Sam's name was on the sign. First place I ever went (in my 65 years) for Tomatoe Pie. Sammy never used the term pizza.
You folks are making me hungry
for Sam's food and soda.. and hes been closed for decades :))
Mack: Makes me hungry too. Guess you remember the good times you had when you were there. I also miss the pies, nothing like them in Florida. One good Italian place locally, but it can't compare to Sam's, Marucca's or DeLorenzo's.
Only Sammy had the thinnest of crust...burnt just right on the bottom...and if you tried to pick up a piece of pie too soon the topping would gently slide off the crust...and if you managed to take a bite too soon, the roof of your mouth would pay the price...but in the long run all worth it for the best tomatoe pie around at the time...and ice cold bottles of coke (not the diet crap) out of the big red coke cooler. Juke box always had the right songs on it. My mom used to get dough from Sam for her homemade Calzones, Zeps and tomatoe pie.
Saxman: Stop it, it's almost lunch time here at work.
OK Paulie...that does it...goin' to De Lorenzo's tonight for a Tomato Pie. I'll keep you and Joe Z in my thoughts.
In the 1940 this place was Ferry's Auto Parts Store.
