Before Daddio's shop this was Mrs. Wirag's Used Bicycle store (pronounced Vee-ragg).

Back in the days during the Depression, the war and into the fifties, this was the place where many kids got their first bikes.

She walked the alleys finding broken up bikes in the trash and worked her "recycling" magic - a little silver paint on the handle bars to cover rusted chrome, maybe some baling wire to secure the brake armature, fresh lube on the brake discs and chain and friction tape on the grips. All she wanted was a dollar or two and you had a bike that would last the summer or until you outgrew it.

Back in the early part of the last century, her husband Andrew owned and operated what is now the Clin-Mott Cafe, down S. Clinton a bit.

As with most of the old timers in my Burg day, I think Mrs. Wirag was widowed pretty early on.
