Washington School, Emory Avenue, The Burg
Washington School, Emory Avenue, The Burg
Many Burg kids like me had the experience of never
having to take a bus to school which I think is
rare now and was actually rare back then. For me
most of my school days were in Franklin, Jr4 and
Trenton High. Franklin was 3 blocks from our
house, Jr4 was about a half mile and Trenton
High was about a mile. None of those walks
bothered kid feetm which can walk all day..
and then play ball after school:)

HI MAC...SCHOOL BUSSES DID'NT EXIST DURING MY SCHOOL DAYS EITHER. I BELIEVE TRENTON TRANSIT GAVE SPECIAL FARES TO KIDS USING THE BUS TO SCHOOL. WE HAD A VERY LONG WALK TO JUNIOR 4 BUT HAMILTON AND TRENTON HIGH WERE NEARBY. IT'S MUCH DIFFERENT IN TODAY'S TIME.
Ralph is correct. We used tokens you bought at the office at a reduced price. They were about the size of nickel with a big "T" in the center.
My THS day started out east on the B Crosstown down Olden to Hamilton and the school, that was a special detour for TCHS.
Evenings I had to get the T Hiltonia to State and Broad or Warren (a better seat was to be had), and then onto the S Colonial Lakelands for the final trip back to Brunswick and Olden. You got a little paper "transfer" slip from the driver so it was only a single fare.

Much of the busing today is a finance game as I found when I sat on an advisory committee. It has no bearing in reality except how much the district gets in funding from the state DOE.
Hi Ralph & Skip.
A bus was for special school trips to places like the Trent House or The Old Barracks only for us:))
