Emory Avenue Under Blue Summer Skies, The Burg

Emory Avenue Under Blue Summer Skies, The Burg
I always thought this row of homes looked cool as
I passed by it on foot or on a bike on in a car
back in old Burg days:)

HI MAC...IF THAT'S EMORY AND WHITTAKER, IT'S ANOTHER ONE OF THE PLACES I LIVED IN THE BURG. OUR FRIENDS JUST COULD'NT KEEP UP WIH US. AFTER I WASD DISCHARGED FROM THE NAVY IN 1946, WE BOUGHT A NEW HOUSE IN MORRISVILLE WITH THE MONEY I ACCUMULATED. I DID'NT DRAW ANY PAY ALL THE WHILE I WAS IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC. AFTER MORRISVILLE WE FINALLY SETTLED IN MERCERVILLE AND WAS THERE TILL 1960. BEST REGARDS AND GOD BLESS.

Ralph, you would not believe the Navy in 1968. For a swabbie or airdale to save a thin dime was next to impossible.

At boot camp we paid for everything from that first haircut to shoe laces. Yep, uniforms had to be purchased.

I never bothered even picking up any service ribbons because you had to pay for those too. They said it was LBJ and Nixon's way to save the taxpayer the cost of the war. GI bill was severely reduced too all done on the "QT".

Army and Marines the uniform was still "free" however.

You will love this since it's right out of "Sgt. Ernie Bilko", when I was headed home I had my sea bags shipped to Trenton only to find on the last day of active duty we were having a "surprise" sea bag inspection. Of course a savvy old CPO just happened to know where there was a supply of used uniforms available. $1 would buy you a hat (x3), work pants, dress white and blues and so on.

Of course that went right into that old birds pocket along with the LT who would not sign you out without "the bag".
