The Old Police Station, South Broad Street, The Burg

The Old Police Station, South Broad Street, The Burg
A building often seen by Burg folks when coming down
Cass Street to merge with South Broad Street after
coming off the John Fitch Way AKA Route 29. I do
not remember it as a Police Station in my day. Does
anyone remember when it closed?

UPDATE:
I remember that in 1971 it was still active. The new
facility opened between 1972 or 73.

Mack, It was to me the Old 2'nd Precinct. You could walk down Broad St. safely.

The HQ building is gone too, that was on Chancery Lane and it's now a parking garage. I never even heard of a reference to a "first precinct" so probably when the Broad Street site was built it just became that by default.

1972 saw the end of the two precincts and the opening of the North Clinton Avenue location.

South Trenton's John Prihoda became Chief in 1970 and perhaps some of you remember his son Jack. He had a surf shop on Lalor in that first block by Broad.

According to the information provided on the Trenton Police Museum website created by Mo Crosby (http://trentonpdhistory.org/Museum/), the Second Precinct was built in the early 1880's as the municipal building for the Borough of Chambersburg, and also housed the Chambersburg jail and Police Department. After Chambersburg was annexed by Trenton in 1888, renovations were made and additional cells were built. The building, which stands to this day, served as the Second Precinct until 1972.

The First Precinct, (Police Headquarters)on Chancery Lane was the former Freeze Market House. It was converted into the police building in 1888 and served as Headquarters for the department until 1972. The building no longer stands.
