Mannino's Pizza, Hamilton Avenue, The Burg
Mannino's Pizza, Hamilton Avenue, The Burg
In my Trenton High days of 1977-1980 they were in the building
next door and had a walk-up window. Manninos has good pizza
and it also has delicious french fries and cheesesteaks and
it always did. I think the Trenton High kids are not allowed
out for lunch as freely as we were back in the day but this
is a great place to have right near the school.

We were never allowed off school grounds in the 60's.
The big treat was when my GF ran for goodies for the teachers at the Hamilton Sweet Shop and she would sneak me something.
Off campus was a trip to Dave Wiseberg's office.
I went to both TCHS and ND. At ND there was no place to go off campus except through the woods. Like a jail break I pulled it off one day during a baseball game; I ran for the ball and kept running.

Hi Skip:)
You made it past the giant electrified fence and guard dogs over at Notre Dame? I am impressed ! (Just being silly folks, ND is a fine school).
The thing was in the late 70s at
THS.. I don't know of we were "officially" allowed to leave at lunch, but we did and nobody ever
said anything LOL:)
Hamilton Sweet Shop was still there
im my day. Nice place. I have a write-up about it somewhere on the blog, its owners then came from Greece and established a Burg legend:)
Mack, you mentioned in another post that perhaps Rossi's was on Merline Avenue.
Not many people were aware of a small place that made a darned good pie in the 60's that was in an out of the way location. It's still there and called Candela's on Lawn Park Avenue and the lot adjoins Merline.
I wonder if this and the local Saint Ann's were part of a small but formative Italian section of Lawrence?
