Downtown Trenton at Christmas
Downtown Trenton at Christmas
Burg area folks before my Burg day may remember this.
This must have been a great place in its day.
I wish I had a picture of the big Noel sign at
Chambers Street and Hamilton Avenue but I have yet
to locate a good one. But Downtown Trenton was really
pretty here:)

Mack this picture was probably early 50's but I remember going into town at night Christmas shopping with my mother, Dunhams, Yards, Sears, the old Mr. Peanut store. No crime those days are gone.
The billboard with the Three Wise Men along with don't forget the three ring sign and ask the man for Ballantine or perhaps a Schaffer.
I can see Yards, Lofts Candy, and I guess that is Dunham's or Lit's the pic is in front of?
The shot has to be 1960 or so because that is a Studebaker Lark in front of that 58 Impala. How about that old International with the chicken wire sides. They never (or hardly ever), changed the looks year to year.
That was so typical, having a dreary rainy week before Christmas and all the kids waiting for the temp to drop.
Is Belle Mountain open yet? Can we go watch them ski?

Hi JoeZ:)
Thats the way I remember our
"Downtown" AKA Quakerbridge Mall.
Clean and safe. I would often do Harvest House in Woolworths for a
Burger when I went Christmas Shopping:)
Hi Skip:)
Belle Mountain closed in the 80s..
I didnt know that either til I did the blog as I am not a skiier:)
If you look at NELSAP (New England Lost Ski Area Projets), they actually have a section for New Jersey and our lost little areas. There are a few memories from yours truly noted there. It is so sad the County of Mercer could not afford to keep the place going. Best thing that ever happened to me; that little bump and I went so often I almost, as you can see, wore it out. Dates vary since it had a on and off history but it started in the winter of 1964 with an official closing of 1997. The last time I was there was teaching my daughter and that was the winter of 1992. I know there were a few years they could not open due to temperature. Skis back "in the day" could be rented at JT Archery on Ewingville Road or Capitol Sporting on Olden.
Christmas and Little Belle went hand in hand. Who needed The Alps when you had an imagination and a rope tow? :) :)

Guys, Mall shopping can not compare to going in and out of stores downtown, getting warm and than freezing your butt out in the streets. That was fun, did not notice the 58 Chevy I was just amazed at the signs and decorations we have that memory at least.
Thank goodness! I was getting worried because I could not figure out where that shot was taken.
It's on North Broad looking down across State. The church and Capitol Theater finally came into "focus". I guess that would be Litmann Jewelers on the right (kind of a dark greenish/aqua panels), and that partly underground news stand on the left. Was it S.S. Kresge or Woolworth that had the side entrance by the Capitol. Hot dogs and goldfish anyone?
I actually met Del Shannon in a small cafe in the alley by the Capitol between Cheap John's and ___ ?
