The New Colonial Bakery, Hudson Street, The Burg.

The New Colonial Bakery, Hudson Street, The Burg.
Once upon a time this was The New Colonial Bakery. The
sign still says it is but it was purchased by Italian
People's Bakery years ago.
For the purposes of this blog its really cool they left
the exterior as it was:)

SJ Bill adds:
I used to deliver Trentonians in the Burg wayyyy back
when. Each morning, before it got light, you'd walk past
the New Colonial and see the bakers weighing out dough
and forming the loaves through that very window.

Tom Pass adds:
In my opinion, they had the best bread back in the day.

I agree Tom

Anon adds:
i worked at new colonial from 1978-1986. great bread!
petrino's tobacco shop was next to the bakery (to the
right in the pic). on any summer eveing you would hear
the older italian gents hanging at petrino's talk about
EVERY baseball world series game played. of course,
Joe DiMaggio was ALWAYS mentioned.
...and another thing, there is absolutely NOTHING like
the smell of hot fresh bread and the sound of chuch
bells wafting through the burg streets early on sunday
morning. great memories!!!

They had the best little dinner rolls shaped like a hoagie roll. After a Thanksgiving dinner, we made sandwiches with turkey, stuffing and gravy, some put on a slab of cranberry sauce and played poker.

Hi Joe:)
Thats a good idea for the rolls:)
I should add here that you really
could not go wrong with Barberos
or Italian Peoples rolls either.
The standard of rolls around here
was and is usually excellent. You
and I and locals know this. This comment is just for folks reading
this not from the area:)

Hi Mac.....I remember that bakery going way back to the days when Chambersburg was in its glory. My neighbor and good friend, Marjorie from Bert Ave. married the owner sometime in the 40s. They lived next door to the bakery and I'd get to see them during the Feast when I visited. The other Giovenetti girl was Virginia Conti, who was on the SchoolBoard for some time. I sure miss those days and reading all this chatter from the guys make me feel great. Best Regards.

Hi Ralph:)
Its always great to read your comments on here. I had no idea
Virginia Conti had a connection to New Colonial Bakery. Great comment:)

My great grandfather started this bakery with his brother. I imagine it was probably started in the 1920's as he came to the US in 1902. I think the family sold it to Italian People's bakery in the late 80's. It was the Maisto family that ran this baker for generations.
