Hewitt Street on a Summer Afternoon, The Burg

Hewitt Street on a Summer Afternoon, The Burg
This is the 400 block of Hewitt Street and was part of
my block or "around the corner" from me. All of the people
have changed and the days and months and years have followed
one another endlessly since then.. but when I catch just
the right moment a picture takes me back.
The minute I saw how this picture came out I knew I had
captured a moment of my Burg Memory Lane.
A parking lot was gravel and uneven and when it rained
some puddles formed. I remember we got a cinder block
and a piece of wood and jumped that puddle with our
bikes. God knows where we found a cinder block..hey we
were Burg kids..we knew where stuff was...
I remember someone practicing drums to a hit song at the
time "Hitching a Ride" by Vanity Fair..late 1960s.. and
they were pretty good. I remember someone had a VW Beetle
which they had to start by having folks push it.
Wait... Moms calling... I have to go home for supper..
or Dad just got home as its a saturday at around 2 in
the afternoon and we are going to Independence Mall to
spend our allowance...

Mack, I have fond memories of Beatty St. and around my parent's house of Myrtle St. and Pine St., lots of fun playing games and baseball and just hanging around.

Hi JoeZ:)
We kept those traditions going but
I think todays kids do it far less due to cable TV, DVDS, Video Games, and the Internet..none of which we around yet in my 70s day and your slighty earlier day:)

Baseball at Penn Fruit with our "coach" Ed Smolinski?

Ed was from North Trenton but was known all over town for baseball and soccer. There were stories of him playing in Europe and something about The Queen of Denmark. Al Dowling and Bo Belinski ..

Sorry to go off topic (Hewitt) but the only places we played ball in that neighborhood were at "The Circle" (Penn Fruit) .. site of the old Dunn Field where Willy Mays played and a small lot by the Anchor Pottery.

Mack .. what triggered that was you comment on keeping the traditions going.

Ed Smolinski was like a dad to most of us back then and holy cow, even tried out for the Phillies.

Ed would not allow kids to just sit during the summer or winter for that matter. "Get off that fat azz and get in the house and get your glove".

If it wasn't for him, I still be a fat little couch potato.

Hi Skip. Your comment on Ed S
is good enough to be a post.
