Mack, we use to love cheese steaks and fries from Nino's on Chambers.
The Trenton style of cheesesteak differed a bit from that of Philly - more power to Trenton! Our food culture was superior.
If you go to Gino's, Pat's or almost anyplace in Filthadelphia, they recommend Cheese Wiz as a recommended topping. Come on! That's NOT Italian. Stick to your TastyKakes!
Our local rolls from Trenton bakeries - Italian People's and Barbero's - were much better tasting than Amoroso's of Philly.
Most Trenton places perferred three or four slices of white American cheese melted onto the fried steak at the last. All places had a pile of already fried onions, mushrooms & peppers.
Some places like Pete's served steaks with peppers and potatoes in a mustard sauce - like a Casino Dog, but on a cheesesteak. It was great!
Back in the fifties there was a small place called Emil's on Cass St. near Quinnies Bar. Emil served cheesesteaks that were covered with a homemade spicy tomato sauce, with fried onions and crinkle cut French fries. Dee-lish!
Anthony's on South Clinton had good steaks AND you could play the pinball machines in the back room.
One thing I found was that most Trenton steaks tasted similar because I never saw anybody scour their grills clean. I was told by Anthony that it was forbidden because you'd ruin the grill surface. You kinda scraped most of the stuff off, wipe the grill clean with a wet cloth, and that was all. The real flavor kept building on the surface month after month.
Oh, I miss it! ;-)
Mike's by Helen Fuld Hospital made a wicked good steak. A few cheese slices on that pile at the last minute before they shoveled it on the roll. CHEEZ-WHIZZ? I'm glad I didn't know that but that's just another short cut or cost cutting bunch of baloney.
Heck, I won't even go into an Arby or Quizno because the "steak" or "beef" is reprocessed mush more akin to baloney.
Mike, got "too big for his britches" and tried to move and expand. He went from the Hospital to Pennington and Olden and then opened up a place that is now Suburban Wrench up by the 84 Lumber in Pennington. In reality, in 70' or so you had to get out of the neighborhood I guess.
There is a "Pete's" where the second Mike's was on Olden and Pennington. The place has been pushing a 50's and 60's revival theme now for some time. I had a so-so steak there a few years ago and last year was lured back by the sign that promised "Old Fashion Trenton Tomato Pie" but INHO it was a poor substitute.
Same sign out on South Olden at "Corleone's" promised Trenton Pie and when I went in it was pizza with Polka of sauce. I asked the guy what the difference was and he got mad so I walked out. There is no Corleone in the Trenton area book that I could find so I doubt if they are an old "local" name.
Beware if you are coming home. There are a lot of shops trying to trade on TRENTON TOMATO PIE and they are clueless.
Let me clarify that Polka thing. The sauce was in large dots and that was what made it a pie. I have also been served two pies without cheese that were on the menu as "Trenton Pie". One last funny one if you will. I go into a place by the old Korvette's and order a pie with sausage. It comes out and the box is marked "Pepperoni" ... now for myself, I have never ordered a pepperoni pie in my life and tell the guy this and hey, I'll wait for a sausage ... no problem. Guy with the huge schnozz (he is NOT Italian), we get into a did not/did too/did not thing so I start to walk out the pie hits the wall right by the door and almost got 2 poor gals having lunch.
Mack:
Pete's is no longer at the Pennington and Olden Avenue location. Pete's son sold out to his partner at that located and was runing the store at Hudson and Elmer Streets, he since closed that location and now is doing very well at his new location on White Horse Avenue in Hamilton Twp. (Monte's old place.}
