U.S. Steel Plant

This is along South Broad Street and I believe this was
the U.S. Steel Plant, it is now gone and the Arena
is now here. I can see the big Trenton Auto Glass ad in
the distance.

UPDATE: SJ Bill adds:

I think this plant was the old US Steel Wire and Cable site
the current site of the arena.
I'm pretty USS S&W was a competitor and not a part of
Roeblings. (I had an uncle that worked in that plant and down
at Amercican Bridge by the river. That big reel on the ground
was used to run out the wire rope before it was spooled for
shipment. There was a grade crossing on South Broad Street
between Capitol Motors and Apex Lumber that was used by a
small switch engine every day. Traffic was stopped by a
switchman using road flares. A small train of wire rope
products went out every night. We kids gathered up the
spent road flares for "recycling."

My Dad worked at USS for more than 30 years. First as a "wire drawer" right after the war and later as the "straw" boss in the yard. Spent a number of early evenings looking through the windows in wire mill watching the guys pulling the wire.
