Who is From The Burg?

Who is From The Burg?
Was the Burg a purely geographical area or was it a way of
life? When I made this blog I included the surrounding areas
of Villa Park, Franklin Park, South Trenton, East Trenton,
and nearby Hamilton. If you knew the area and attended a
Burg school such as Immaculate like my Dad, you were from
the Burg in my opinion. If you owned a business in the Burg
but lived in one of the surrounding areas, you were from
the Burg. Lets face it, many folks in Villa Park could
fall out of bed and be at Rossi's. If you hung in the Burg
often and thus were part of it all, you were from the Burg.
You can be two things at once as well. If you grew up in
beautiful Villa Park and did most of your schooling in the
Burg..you could be from Villa Park and the Burg.
Its more about shared tradition and values and ideas than
it is about geography. That is my opinion. Yours may differ.
and thats fine:)

Oh...and God Bless The Old Burg:)

Hi Mack: Well. I'll take a shot at this. I was born on Mott St. as you know, so that makes me a native of the Burg. My young years were split between Villa Park and the Burg. We bought a house on Bert Ave. in 1924. We rented that house in 1925 and moved back to Mott St. We went back to Bert Ave. after 2years and lived there until 1937, when we moved to Franklin St. My schools were Hamilton, Jr.4 and Trenton High, so I consider myself a true native of the Burg and Villa Park. I left that area in the 50s and moved to Mercerville, where we lived for 10 years. I believe many others from the Burg took a similar course, but we always kept in touch with old Chambersburg, Best Regards.

I ate a hamburger at rossi's. I delievered the newspaper to papa's. I went to Immaculate. I went to the feast of the lights. I played pinball in many a confectionary shop. I was a pinboy at Heil's. I shined shoes in many a tavern in the burg, I had a beer at rittmans. I went to trenton catholic and cathedral. I knew storky. Played at wetzel field. Dated young woman from villa victoria. A casino dog and a cherry coke was a gourmet meal. Roma savings was not across the alley(Miami) from tony goes when I was young. Got a pizza out the kitchen from Grecco's for 50 cents. I was born at St. Francis and lived in Villa Park. Yes I am from the burg...

I was born at McKinley Hospital. Lived on Hamilton Avenue at Monmouth. Went to Robbins School, Junior 2 and of course Trenton High. Graduated from Upsala College. Worked in Trenton as a pharmaceutical rep and at the NJ State Museum. Moved to California 20 years ago. For the last year and a half, reading Macks Blog I realized I've been away from the Burg for more years than I actually lived IN the Burg. But the Burg is alive and well at the core of my soul. I am from The Burg! Thanks again Mack for all your work! Noel

Well! Anonymous sure sounds like someone I know. Especially being a pinboy, I did that at Browns Mills for 2 cents a game. He remembers Tony Goes being next to Hamilton School and going to Cathedral before it was all girls. He lived in Villa Park and hung at Rossi's and Greco's, he knew Storky and played at Wetzel Field. We both feel proud about being from the Birg. Regards.
