The Sports Arena, 40 North Stockton Street, Trenton

The Sports Arena, 40 North Stockton Street, Trenton
The corner of North Stockton Street and Commerce Street.
This picture is from before my time but I assume some
of you folks remember it. I got this from website
Trenton Speaks which is a fine local issues site that
on occasion has interesting Trenton pictures:)

Hi Mack: I sure remember the Sports Arena. It was the scene of many local and well known fighters of the day. Guys like Young Terry, Paulie Walker, Ike Williams, Georgie Levy, Tony Maglione fighting high ranked boxers in their class. The wrestlers also were featured along with other forms of entertainment, I recall seeing Jimmy Dorsey's band when they were rated one of the best. It sure brings back many pleasant memories. Regards, Ralph

Mack:
Every week they would feature a big band at the Arena. I remember seeing Kay Kaiser, Harry James, Ava Ray and many more at this location. We could not wait for the week to end to see another band. Trenton had many good things going, its a shame it had to end.

I remember as a teen going to the fights with my Dad and his cronies.
One memory stands out. I was 15, after the fights, one of my Dad's friends tosses me the keys and says
"Here Bobby, drive us home," and my Dad promptly lost it. I drove with my Dad and 4 of his friends, and, of course, this was a ball for me.
My Dad was still worried, the the man who gave me the keys said" don't worry George, you know I'm the Chief of Detectives and the other guys a detectives.
That's the way it was in the 50's.
