A Casino Italian Hot Dog

A Casino Italian Hot Dog
One of the glories of the old Burg we all loved and
miss. We were very lucky to be part of it all, every one
of us:)

Wow, Remember those great hot dogs, at that time, for the office I would go out and bring 6 or sometimes a dozen back for the folks at lunch. At one time the girls knew our order.

Late at night, almost always in the summertime, it was those great Texas Weiner's from the restaurant next to the paper stand on N Warren street. Seemed like we always had someone that would go, because at night that's where they bought their "scratch sheets" Remember We would but sometimes a dozen or more depending on who was around.

By the way, the first I met Nick Tomasulo was here. We had lunch. Everyone knew Nick and he had the laughing. This was just before he opened his own office.

HI guys: I just got back from my trip to Tampa and I have got to say a few things about Casino. It was started by my friend Earnie Sbarro. I believe his father had a shoe repair shop at that location and they turned it into a hot dog place. Latter Gino Macaroni married into the family and was another charter owner. they were across the street from the Park Theatre and next to my old school, Hamilton. All this happened in the 40s, I believe.

Mack:
I am told that the Casino was sold and now is closed. The one in Morrisville is also closed. No more Casino Hot Dogs.

Ralph, was there a school on the lot that Roma Bank now occupies?

Yeah Joe, Hamilton Elememtary School was located where Roma Savings is now. I started school there and went to Junior 4 afterward. There was an alley between where the Casino was located and the school. Ernie Sbarro's father's shop and a group of garages were in the alley. I remembered when they started and thought it was a good idea.

So was it Hamilton Elementary School that was torn down in the early 60s? I remember the building had a fire escape on the back, on Miami Alley an htere was a parking lot for about 10 - 15 cars.
Then came Roma Savings.

A few family facts about the Casino. My grandfather Canio known to most as Tony Goes actually started making these hot dogs on Charles St. Then one year later purchased 15 Anderson St right around 1940. Ernie took over for him in the late 50's when my grandfather opened the Paradise Swimming Club on Rt 1, Princeton. It was right around the this time Gino Macoroni became a partner after marrying my aunt Mary Sbarro. Ernie then sold out to Gino in the late 60's. It's sad that such a Burg icon is no longer.

Hey Mack....Frank Pinto here...I worked for Big Al and Gino Mac from 1973 - Jan of 1979, I made many Casino Dogs, and eat almost as many....nothing like a Cheese Dog with the works and fried onions....I can taste it as I write this post....when I started in 73, a dog was .25 cents....it was a meal in a bun, we were packed from 10 - 2...I believe Circle F had three different lunches, and with THS kids and the locals...we went through a ton of dogs, those were the days....and Big Al, Gino and Mary, were great to work for.....it was like being one of the family.....and don't forget Tango Mike Sbarro.....God Bless his soul!

Casino Tony Goes was open by Canio and Theresa Sbarro in 1932 on Charles Street. He later moved to 15 Anderson Street. My dad was 15 years old when he started to work for Canio and later married Mary, Canio's only daughter. Mary work her childhood there and her and Gino operated the Casino Tony Goes for many years till in closed in 2008. Her daughter operated the Casino Tony Goes Restaurant in Morrisville, the Morrisville pool and the cafe in the County Administration Bldg in Trenton for 4 years. Canio, Gino and Mary had a great business and feed the families in Chambersburg for many years. alot of business tried to call thier product Casino Tony Goes but only a true Casino Tony Goes "Italian Hot Dog" aka The Jersey Dog has its roots from Chambersburg section of Trenton. Many memories

Hi,
TCHS student, '75-78, who lived on Casino hot dogs and pasta fasol (with a ton of parm sprinkled on). Moved away many years ago but still visit on occasion. I went by the old place and see that its closed (along with Barberos and those terrific chocolate chip cookies). Saw a "Tony Goes" at the ball field in Morrisville, but it didn't seem too active. Is there a Casino Tony Goes anywhere? I also saw a Jimmy G's just opened in Hamilton. They say they're the grandchildren. Would this be the place to go to get one off those wonderful hot dogs from 40 years ago?
