A Blog about the Chambersburg area of Trenton NJ. The Burg we all loved and miss. If you were from the Burg I hope many of the pictures and lists and comments under them from good folks bring back some nice memories. Villa Park, Franklin Park, South Trenton, and nearby Hamilton also mentioned. Use the search box atop the blog to find schools, churches, streets, stores, bars etc that you remember. Over 4000 posts and 3000 pics. Enjoy:)

Actually I believe the church prior to Immaculate was Our Lady of Lourdes, which gave its name to the cemetery. My German / Bohemian ancestors were parishoners and founding members of the new Immaculate Conception Church. Of course, the first Catholic Church in Trenton was St. John's in the early 1800s, followed by Sacred Heart (after St. John's burned down)

Yes. From a commemerative book about Immaculate. I see a notation about Our Lady of Lourdes, which was apparently a small wodden structure adjacent to the current church, circa 1875. The cemetery name also tracks. Actually, the Lourdes phenomenon of the time tracks with the name of the new church. The woman famously identified herself to Bernadette: "I am the Immaculate Conception." The dogma about this was issued only a few years earlier. Also, the Franciscans heavily promoted the idea for a long time before the Papal decree and had a special joy in the pronouncement. So it all hands together in this image. Ed
I also have a post on here
about the Roeblings including a

in my Burg day.
And I have a link to the German-American Society on my bloglist:)
When I was in 1st and 2nd grade at Immaculate, they still had one confessional for German speaking parishoners.
Immaculate Conception Church is the most beautiful church in Trenton
