1100 Chestnut Avenue, The Burg

1100 Chestnut Avenue, The Burg. This was Bijou Florist
back in the day and a few apartments. This is another
example of the Burg architecture that you also find in
artsy old towns.

I think this is Laventhals Shoe Store, on the irregular corner Bijou Florist was on the other corner, with Wittakin Jewelers (it's a house now) attached on the Chestnut side. Joyce Tantum lived next to that and Mousie Palinkas lived across the street from Joyce.

You may be right, my records
usually but not always accurate.
This is the address for
Bijou Florist both in the 50s and the 60s. Perhaps the picture taken
is wrong? But I have 3 versions of that so if this is wrong its wrong
5 times. Possible.
Or it could have become Laventhals
later on?
I find a Palikas at 1214 Chestnut
Avenue (Andrew&Ann) not the same block.
I find a Tantum at 1219 Chestnut
Avenue (Harold S & Evelyn) but
again not the same block.
Oh well, its a nice building for
selling shoes or flowers :))

Nope, it is the Bijou Florist cornter, Laventhals was across the street and had more of a store front where they displayed the shoes. My opinion....of course!

My uncle and aunt when first married lived in an apartment in that building.

I think we're all wrong. There is a "one way" sign on the street corner, next to the building. None of the streets on that intersection are one way (Chestnut or Clinton). This must be another building on another corner.

I think this is the corner of Chestnut and Rusling, the next intersection down from Bijou. Appraisers are really anal.

This one for me is a pass as
it wasnt something I ever noticed
if it was around in my time.
Still, its a nice building :)
And it is on Chestnut & Rusling
according to my records:)

Your dad always told me "to see what a building used to be always look up". That's all that remain on some of these great old buildings, 'cause the ground floors have all been changed over the years. He taught me an appreciation for what once was. Thanks Ed.
