My dad owned Trenton Technical Institute for 47 years, which was in St Stephens Grammar School after the diocese closed it. I taught there for 18 years from 640 E State St, Trenton Catholic after it closed, St Stephens then finally St Pete's on Cass St We graduated thousands, who went on to great careers. Anybody remember "Trenton Tech"

Trenton Tech back in the mid-60's offered the first IBM programming course (certificate program) for the IBM 1401 computer system...I graduated and got a job for the State of NJ as a programmer...still have all the reference books plus my certificate. The school was in town on West State St...I also attended art classes there on Saturday mornings

OK Paul, this is Barbra Freund, you were in my class at Trenton Tech.

Wow Barb....so long ago. Did you go on and work in the field? It was a small class as I remember it.

Yes I did. Worked as a programmer for DMV on Montgomery (you used to see me when you drove by at night and the office was all lit up. Got my Masters and went to Norelco and worked as Data Processing Manager. Had enough when the single, party hardy crowd moved on and the geeks moved in. Left there and taught at Rider, Trenton State and Trenton Tech at night for dad. Now I'm an appraiser like Mack and his family.

DMV, huh?
then you must have known some of my friends that left DMV for SAC.Systems & Communications, where I worked...Alex Candelori, Ralph Bencivengo, Bob McShultz, Mary Lyons....we were down on East State until we moved out to State Police Headquarters in W Trenton.

I knew Alex even before we worked together. He used to teach at Trenton Tech in the evenings. Knew Ralph also. Norm Salt was my day superviser, but I switched over to 4-12 shift real fast. The 3rd shift converted all the paper files to computer. I guess Jersey has us to thank for the whole DMV mess...We started it.

Norm Salt...ah, the Alfred Hitchcock of Trenton!

Dum, da da da da, Dum, Da, Dum. He not only acted like Hitchcock, the song followed along with him, everywhere he went. The rest of us were party, hardy. I was much younger than everybody else, but they used to pretend to throw all their house keys into a hat and pull out each others keys. Told me they were spouse swapping for the weekend...ugh, the thought of going home with those "old" 25-30 year old guys skeeved me. Of course they were just kidding...right?

Don't know what you where missing!!
(of course, I never worked at DMV, but Candelori and Bencivengo??..what a team - we had great times at SAC).

Who remembers the A&P on Beatty and Adeline, across from Winowitz?

Saxman said...

Worked at the Beatty A&P for a short time. The manager Steve was a friend of our family..he had Lou Gehrig's and it was sad to watch him waste away. My parents would send me (only 2 blocks away) there for fresh ground A&P coffee and I would always get a Lemon Tasty Pie.

The first time I ever saw "dry ice" was in that A&P. Cold ice steaming?...had to pick it up and see for myself. How could ICE be so HOT. Quick trip to my uncle Joe, Dr Kondor at 1414 S Broad.

Oh Yeah the old A&P store, took many a trip there also. Talking about Doctors, use to go to an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor a few doors down from the CYO. Never had appointments, you just showed up and remembered your place in line, his name was Dr. Crane.

Saxman said...

Good old Dr Crane...a close friend of our family and a little closer to the RKO Broad...OK CYO if you must...was my dentist, Dr Sussman.
Dr Crane would always kid me about how he heard us all playing in the Harrison school yard and that we sounded like a bunch of "wild animals"..always told him it wasn't me...I was the quiet one. Bless him.

I remember Dr. Crane, went to his office many times. Bye the way the A&P coffee was called 8 O'clock coffee if I'm not mastaken.

Everybody went to Dr Crane...we were probsbly all there at the same time...standing room only.

Now there was a Doctor one could rely on. I remember he'd open the door and say next, took you behind one of the 3 curtains, put some cotton up your nose and give you a magazine to look at. That man cured what was hurtin.

2 kinds of coffee to pick from at the A&P...Eight'o'Clock in the red bag and another ??? in the black bag. Coffee bean grinder on the right side of the store...dump the beans in, put the bag under, choose the grind and press the button....I can still smell the aroma.

Sax...Bokar coffee in the black bag. Boy, since Joe Z shook up the brain cells, I'm just pulling this stuff out. Thanks Fr Joe!!!
