People's used to be THE Italian bakery to go to...years ago. Barbero's was 2nd choice. Now I hear that People's isn't even run by Italians anymore and that it's just not the same. :(

Anonymous,

Why are you surprised. I don't think too many things in the Burg are Italian anymore. Not the same and a shame.

The Burg as it was is gone
forever of course.
It was our little corner of the
world for a while.
It lives forever in my mind as
"home" no matter where I may
go. What a great place it was:)

Mack,

You are so right, it was a great place, thank God we lived there when it was.

People's bought my uncle Pat and aunt Connie DelAversano's house on Elmer St and tore it down when they expanded out back.

Still run by Italians but bread products have changed over the years.

I still go to Porfiros to buy home made pasta and gravy, but only in daylight. Stopped at Barberos and nobody spoke english. Hard to find good torps anywhere. The Burg was a special place in time, alive in my memories only. Don't know if you ever read Janet Evanovich books. All set in the Burg as if it were the 60's-70's (the REAL burg) but present time. I can close my eyes and I'm home again.

The Burg has changed indeed. I wandered into Barbero's a while back and a young woman asked me for a ride to Butler St. I thought it was odd since Butler St. is only two or three blocks away. I let her get in my car anyway, figuring what could happen, it's the Burg. She turned out to be a crazy hooker, taking her clothes off right in the car. I dropped her off in front of St Joachim's. I'm still shaking my head. This would not have happened back in the day.

Italian Peoples has been family run for 74 years and still makes everything the best. The burg may have changed but they are still there, what other place can say that. Everyone moved away if they stayed it wouldn't have changed but things happen and people move on. Remember you didn't have to leave you choose to.
