Two Guys Department Store, Bordentown

Two Guys Department Store, Bordentown
There was a time (due to Mercer County Blue Laws)
when this was the only department store open on
sunday that was nearby. I think this changed in the
late 1960s to early 1970s.

Hi Mack: Two Guys was an outstanding store, I remember having to go all the way to New Brunswick for their store before they built one on Bordentown Road. Their store was on the order of todays Walmart but not quite as large.

And thanks to the Blue Laws, when the store was open on Sunday the clothing section was roped off. Apparently they couldn't sell clothes on Sunday... I worked for Bambergers in the 80's and the #1 Paramus NJ store opened on Sunday during Christmas and had to pay the Blue Law fine. But they wanted the Christmas business which was worth the difference.

two guys in bordentown was a great store!

great childhood memeories about the store...

1) the toy dept (of course!)

2) sporting goods dept (fishing gear)

3) 10-cent bowling alley with wood balls (a cross between skee ball and shuffleboard)

4) 25-cent(?) hot dogs from the vending cart near the entrance

5) record dept. - i think that is where i bought the "tubular bells - theme from the exorcist" 45rpm record

Two Guys was the Sunday afternoon place to go. My parents lived on Brunswick Ave and Korvettes was the evening place to shop. Great memories.

One of the "Two Guys" was Bernie Marcus of The Home Depot fame. My most vivid memories is of the pools that were set up and running, and the smell of chlorine.

Loved that store, me and my dad use to go their all the time. I think I played my first video game (Pong) in that store. Two Guys had a great record dept, as well as an excellent sporting goods section.

After that store closed down, the building if I remember was empty for a time, and then another department store opened their in the early 1980's, Jefferson Ward.

No, Bernie Marcus was not one of the "Two Guys". They were brothers Sid and Herb Hubschman, who opened the first store in Harrison, NJ. Bernie began his retail career when he convinced the Hubschmans to let him operate the cosmetics concession at a Two Guys store in Totowa, New Jersey. He eventually was put in charge of first sporting goods and the major appliance department for the entire company, controlling over $1 billion in sales. He left the company after it was sold to outside investors following Herbert Hubschman's death. (Ironically, the Totowa & Lawnside Two Guys are today Home Depot stores).

Two Guys was the best place to get the original Aurora HO scale slot cars. Every month there was a sale, and I would bug my father to death until he took me. We spent many an evening waiting in line so I could gawk at the display case and pick out a couple A/FX or G-Plus cars and maybe some spare parts or a Hop-up kit... To this day, I have most of the cars I bought there and at other stores like EJ Korvettes and Valley Fair. I'm still hunting those vintage Aurora slot cars today. If anyone out there has any Aurora or Tyco slot cars from the original Two Guys stores, I would be greatly interested in buying them or at least hearing your stories about them.

This store was ahead of its time. This was back in the 1960s-70s they had groceries long before K-Mart or now Wal Mart. When I graduated from in 1978 my mom and dad bought me a black and white television set from Two Guys. It was not much longer probably around 1979 this store was closed for good. It is just a memory but you do not see places like this today circa 2015
