Remember the Paramount Bakery? Ralphs Barber Shop? Milk
delivered to the house in that Aluminum holder on the porch?
Remember the Cumberland Farms Store on Chambers?
Remember Dr. Giangrasso? Dr. Mooney? Ashbrand Hardware
Store? The A&P on Broad Street in Hamilton? Cook AA?
11th Zone? Remember the Blizzard of 78 or the Blizzard of 96?
Remember cheap sneakers were called BoBos? Why? Pants
that didnt go far enough to your shoes were Floods.
The fave winter coats were leather jackets or army jackets.
Fashion in the da Berg !!!

Dr. Giangrasso was my grandmother's Doctor. She wouldn't go to anyone else but him.

Anyone remember frequent fireworks displays on the corner of Hudson and Butler in the early 80s? That was me. The Burg was the place I landed when I left the Steel City area when all the steel mills were closing. I loved the Burg! Colonial Bakery right next door had the best whole wheat bread I have ever tasted to this day. I have never found one to compare. I was a struggling youngster then and my bread was given to me free. God rest your soul, my good buddy, Johnny Nowicki! Johnny took me to my first 'stand up' bar too. Do you remember that place? With the tile 'gutters' around the bar? Pete's Steakhouse was downstairs. Pete and Marge always gave me a great big sandwich for a small price. God rest your souls too Pete and Marge, I was always grateful for your generosity. Fruits and vegetables right outside the door, a shoemaker across the street so I could repair instead of replacing those 1980s stilletos, Delorenzos, Hudson Gardens, what a place to live! The Feast was right under my windows. Mornings I would wake up early when the guy at Liccardello's started yelling at the workers calling them 'Jackanapes'. I found out later that word doesn't mean what I thought it did! LOL I had great neighbors...Marie the crossing guard, Chuckie who was allergic to horses but couldn't stay away from the track LOL...it was a great place to land when I moved to NJ. Even though I was new in town, I didn't feel like a stranger for long. I always felt like someone was watching out for me and never worried about coming home late or starving! That was for sure!

Hi JerseyJane :)

A friend Mike worked at New Colonial Bakery, it is likely
you saw him working there often.

PS: I don't know what a Jackanapes
is :)))

Maybe not quite in the center of the 'burg, but how about the A&P on Beatty St, or the Ketchup Factory on Lamberton (now senior apartments) could smell the tomatoes cooking all over the area!
And the Roller Rink also on Lamberton St... Chambersburg Community House on Beatty and Clinton....2nd district police station on S Broad..Winebergs Dept store on Broad and Dye.

Ah...and who ever could forget Atlantic Mills down on Jersey St!!

hahaha, wow, Atlantic Mills...haven't thought of that place in a long time. Like the prices were cheap enough, you can walk down the ramp and see if there were more 'cheaper' prices..lol..

This wasn't the burg, but close enought...Horsemens Doll Factory. I'm sure you remember the place. My mother use to work there until they decided to head south where the wages were cheaper. My mother also worked in a sewing factory, not far from the roller rink on Lalor street. She would sew 'Russ' brand clothes. Can't think of the name of the place right now. It may come to me around 2:00 one morning..lol.

How about Marsh's Hobby Shop on Broad - right near the Cumberland Farms Store.

I have a very large scar on my chin from jumping out of the 2nd floor window of the abandoned bldg behind Atlantic Mills. Memories...
