515 South Broad Street, The Burg.
An item from when this was Harry' Basch's Nineteenth Hole
Restaurant. Thank you for this Emmary:)
Emmary Basch adds:
Hi again,
I just spoke to my mom who has an amazing memory.
Yes, there was a ballroom above the 19th Hole that my
grandparents ran. It wasn't anything spectacular but
they did host weddings and other types of receptions.
My grandparents also lived above the bar - they didn't
own the building, just the liquor/restaurant license.
She says they were there from 1953 to 1969.
As far as the neighborhood goes...if you are standing
on Bridge Street in front of the building, to the right
was a private residence owned by the Sevarino family.
Mrs. Sevarino would bring pasta over to the 19th Hole
every Wednesday because, well, that's when Italians had
their big pasta dinners. Next to the Sevarino's or
possibly another door down was where Ernie Kovacs lived.
If you are standing on Broad Street, facing the entrance
door to the 19th Hole, to the left was the parking lot.
Next to that was Callas Bike Shop. Next to them was a
Construction company that held government contracts to
build in Greenland. If you turned around and had your
back to the 19th Hole, you'd be facing a building owned
by John A Roebling who was an engineer and built the
Brooklyn Bridge. Next to him was American Bridge,
part of US Steel and is now known as AmBridge.
I'm guessing that those buildings stood in what is now
the parking lot for the Sovereign Bank Arena.
Thank You & Your Mom for Sharing a bit of priceless Burg
area memory lane with us:)
The Sevarinos lived at 713 Bridge Street:)
