Stephen Talks About Wetzel Field, Villa Park
Stephen said...
Spent hundreds of hours at Wetzel Field. Parks and Rec
employees provided games, etc. in the summer near corner by
Liberty and Chambers. In spring and summer ball games played
in front of the wooden grandstand at Bert and Morris. Soccer
games played other times on field laid out near Commonwealth
and Morris. Steven Archibald Zimmerman was friend of my brother
and his family lived on Liberty with backyard facing Wetzel
Field. Major decisions in summer were: go play at Wetzel Field
or go swimming (Trenton HS (M/W/F)/Jr. 2 (Tue/Thur)). Would
stop at Fausti's on Revere to buy soda, candy.

Hi Mack: Stephen and so many others took advantage of Wetzel
Field. I pratically lived there all through my young years.
Living on Bert Ave. and then Franklin St. was like having
Wetzel Field in our back yard. The city did a great job in
providing a grandstand and bleachers along with playgroung
facilities and a club house. All of this was fine during a
period of great depression when most people were out of work
and looking for things to do. On my last visit we stopped
there and spoke with players of the Schroths. They were
surprised to learn that my brother and I both played with the
team in 1936 and 1948. It brought back great memories.
Best regards.
