A Blog about the Chambersburg area of Trenton NJ. The Burg we all loved and miss. Mr. Kramer was a great guy. Had the pleasure on many occasions, maybe too many, to sit with him at the old Choquettes on corner of Hamilton and Franklin sharing a cocktail or two..
Mary & George Kramer were my parent's best friends. Many many nights my parents and the Kramers went to their hangout (Trenfetti's)where Mrs. Kramer would sing with the house band. I remember going with my dad very early in the AM to get hard rolls and bagels fresh from the coal burning oven. I would hang out with Stosh(the baker) who would teach me how to fold dough into hard rolls and allow me to put them in the oven using what seemed to be a 12 ft.long peel.
By the way, the picture shows George Kramer and Stosh (the baker).
A true "Trenton Rite of Passage" was getting the car keys to make that midnight run to get that bag of hot, oh yes, hot steaming bagels. I think they were like a $1 a bag off the back loading dock and just hand the man the money and ask no questions cause' they were busy loading trucks.
And you were the true hero at that time of night with that bag.
Dad said that Kramer was German and either Protestant or Catholic and it worked out that way since the Jewish folks couldn't work on Saturday. Sunday when Saint Hedwig's Mass let out I would head for the local Jewish deli ... Lisook's and they had the front, the WHOLE front window filled with crescent and hard rolls along with Kramer bagels.
My thanks Bob to (I didn't know them) Stosh and his boss for making me the tubby kid I was. I lost most of it by 17 but it's wasn't easy ... between the tomato pies and ...
