236 John Fitch Way, South Trenton

236 John Fitch Way, South Trenton
Once upon a time this was Andy's Auto Supply.
This is before my time but many Burg folks might
remember it:)

When I turned 17 - driving age - many of us kids turned out to be gear heads. We had to. Our cars were older, and they always seemed to need parts like tools, batteries, ignition points and brake parts, and we couldn't afford retail prices at repair shops.

We even hit the junkyards over in Langhorne to get larger pieces like fenders and bumpers. Cars rusted a lot from the salty winter roads.

The best place to get "regular" repair parts was Andy's Auto Parts. Andy's catered to the professional auto repair garages and they also tolerated us young kids. The place had the smell of a good car parts place of the day.

I think the store location pictured was their first store just off John Fitch Way, just north of the Freeway or the "Trenton Makes" bridge.

Many businesses in that part of Trenton were recovering from the big flood and were also trying to work around Trenton's "urban renewal" program back then. Andy's was forced to abandon this site and rebuild elsewhere. IIRC, they chose Coates St, just off of Cass St.

After Andy's built its second building the city came in and decided the new site had to go to allow development of that area.

I wonder what became of Trenton without small businesses?
