A View From Our Yard in Summer Long Ago, The Burg
A View From Our Yard in Summer Long Ago, The Burg
This is our yard at 824 Liberty Street.
This is our neighbor Carol Merrion and her Granddaughter
Kayla. The big white building in the back is part of
Home Seal Company which was owned by Pat Pratico.
Home Seal was on the corner of Liberty Street and
Hewitt Street. The Houses in the background are all
on Hewitt Street. Not seen in this picture is the
view we had in the other direction of a big Barn in
Bill Barber's yard. That barn looked fantastic in the snow.
It gave a sort of countryside feel right in the ole
Burg. Do you remember the views you had from your
yard back in the day?

Hi Ya Mack: The back yards in the Burg were tiny compared to the back yards in Mercerville. The people in the Burg made very good use of their space. My father especially, he planted everything that would grow, including fig trees, that were very sensitive to our weather. During the depression years, we were able to eat well without going to the stores too often. He also was an expert in making wine, Best regards.
Hi Ralph:)
I remember Tomato's were big in
the Burg,,we grew em and they
grew well and tasted great..
I also remember folks having
grape vines too.
Fig trees bundled up for the winter. Wrapped up in roofing material and rope, with a the metal bucket on the top! Always amazed me. Looked like strange creatures in the back yards.
