Back in the 1940s and 1950s, this was a very nice grocery store. I'll try and get the name from my aunt, who is 87 years young. I lived on the 400 block of Woodland, just up the street from this store, with my grandmother, until my parents purchased their own home in Villa Park. My family owned the house from 1927, when it was built, until 2009, when it finally was sold. A sad day for me, but the neighborhood was not the same. By the way, I also attended Franklin School for 3 years.

This grocery store during the 1940s and 1950s was owned by Mr Kish. I guess Kish's Grocery is correct. Anybody remember the name. This was the corner of Dayton and Woodland. Diagonally across, was McCoy's Florist. The greenhouse is still there. There was a large barn back at the alley. I don't know if that is still standing.
One block over at Dayton and William St. was Garretts (spelling?) Candy store. Mrs. Garrett was very patient, letting us kids decide on how we were going to spend 3 cents. Pretzel rods were 2 for a penny. I think the building is still there.
One block east at William and Stanton, was the Chilli Bowl, a combination candy store, hobby shop. This building was recently knocked down, and I believe there is a house there know. This was across from The German Club. There was a bowling alley at the back of the German Club. As kids, we would watch the bowling from the alley through the holes in the wooden wall.
One more block over at South Clinton and Stanton was Fisher's. A soda fountain, grocery, lunch meat, magazine store. I spent a good deal of time there, at the fountain, because my grandmother would always give me a quarter for a milk shake and a tastykake. On the other two corners, at this intersection, was Gropp's Gym and a small A&P store. Long winded on this one!
