1201 South Broad Street, The Burg, Siegel's

1201 South Broad Street, The Burg. Siegel's Pharmacy
This was a half block from where I worked so I often
walked there back in the day. It seemed like there
were only 2 drugstores in the world for a Liberty Street
kid, Siegel's or Episcopo's:)

The one story section to the left was HUBERS BAKERY back in the day. Home of great Melt A ways and crumb cakes, Mr Huber was a large rotund man of German decent.

Anybody remember Millie? She was always smiling. I think she came with the Siegel's building, because she was always there, day and night. Hubers...made something called a Charlotte Rouse, came in a round cardboard cup with cake and custard and whipped cream and you pushed the bottom up to eat it. Funny the pleasant things that stay with you.

Huber's Bakery was my first job when I was in Jr Hi (Jr 4). They had the best crumb cake (the kind with the yellow crumbs). We were always busy on Sunday morning. I was fascinated by the contraption that we could put the boxes in and it tied them with string. Mr. & Mrs. Huber lived right next door and kept a close eye on us. I wish there were still bakeries like that.

Hi Lynne, nothing like Huber's left. I'm out in the sticks of Chesterfield (actually No Hanover) and I go all the way to Easthampton by Mt Holly to the Old World Bakery. Owners are from Italy and bread, rolls and pastries are pretty good (but not Burg good).
