Rolls in the Burg

A Hard Roll in the Burg or New Jersey for that matter is perfection. Not too soft like snowflake rolls..hey you need some traction when biting into a sammich. And not too thick either or it tastes like you are eating a bread sammich. Rolls were an artform in da Burg.

You can't get rolls or bread anywhere in the country like in Trenton or New York.

Hard roll, butter and strong hot coffee! I can remember going over to my grand mom's on Elmer St after Mass at St Jochaims....fresh hot rolls from Italian People's, strong coffee from her perculator pot...I can see the grease floating on top of the coffee and the coffee-soaked roll as I devoured it. This...I miss.

Me too, Paul, my Dad use to get the hot rolls on Sunday morning and I'd pack on the butter and dunk in the coffee. I guess that's why I was a little chubby as a kid.

Ok I'll just say this flat out. You cannot get a hard roll (we called them torpedo rolls) outside of Trenton. In many places they do not even have the concept of a hard roll at all. They think you mean a hamburger bun like at McDonalds. The country is Wonder Bread land.

Out here they tout the splendors of Chicago style pizza. What a joke! Plus they never heard of canoli.
