The first supermarkets I remember were called Giant Tigers and I believe they were both bought by the Laurenti's and became Shop Rites. One was on Calhoun and the other by the Fair Grounds.

This sparked a memory of my Dad. It was about 1965 when the Pennington Circle Shop Rite opened. On early Sunday morning it was never crowded so it became part of his early a.m. ritual to go do the family shopping and then with a cup of coffee go over to Harbourton by the Boehem farm and count the deer herd.

His "ritual" was in part a mystery till one morning I spotted him on my way to ski at Belle Mountain, binoculars in hand. He seemed a bit annoyed that his quite space was invaded. That or I spooked the herd?

HI MAC...ONE OF MY VERY CLOSE FRIENDS WHEN WE WERE KIDS IN VILLA PARK DURING THE 1930'S. THE LAURENTI'S HAD A SMALL STORE AT THE CORNER OF COLUMBUS AND ROEBLING AVES. LARRY AND HIS BROTHERS MARIO AND FRANK ALONG WITH THEIR DOG MAX LIVED THERE FOR A LONG WHILE. I RECALL THE TIME LARY WAS VERY ILL AND RECOVERED NICELY. MARIO'S SON JEFFERY HAD A VERY IMPORTANT POSITION AT THE UNITED NATIONS IN NEW YORK. LARRY WENT ON TO BE THE OWNER OF A FEW SHOP RITE STORES IN THE AREA WHILE FRANK HAD THE LIQUOR STORES. WE LIVED ON BERT AVE. AT THE TIME AND LARRY WAS ONE OF MANY FINE FRIENDS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. REGARDS.
