Kickball

Kickball

We played Kickball in both the front and back lots of Franklin
School back in my days there. Today there is some sort of
building on the back lot on Dayton Street so you could not
play kickball there..and I think the front lot has been
redesigned so its partially unpaved so I dont know if they
play kickball there. Mr Burke used to walk us over to
Franklin Park sometimes on nice days and we could play
kickball there.

Who was Mister Burke?

Nicholas Burke AKA Mr Burke was the
6th grade teacher (along with Mrs Smith who also taught a 6th grade class) at Franklin School when I was there. I had him in 1973-1974 school year. He was a nice man and a fine teacher. I had Miss Cunningham for 5th grade the prior year at Franklin. She became Mrs Burke as the two married in the summer of 1973.

I forget what his first name was but around 1963 or so there was a Mister Burke who taught at Notre Dame. His first name was overshadowed by a new action drama show at the time, "Stoney Burke", so needless to say he became Stoney.

We sadly almost lost him since he drove a Triumph TR-3 and would flick his cigarette out. Some prankster was stealing his gas cap (wasn't me), and he almost blew himself up or at least so he claimed. We all like him so I think the theft stopped.
