Hi Mack, Here I am again with some old Burg history.
I grew up across the street from that building and
in the 40's it was F. Nardi, Grocer, Butcher and
Baker. As I grew up it evolved primarily into a
bakery only, run by Thomas Nardi. His dad, Felice
Nardi was actually one of the first Italian bakers
in Chambersburg. The aroma of his freshly baked
bread still lingers in my nostrils. Above the bakery
was Nardi's Hall, one of the most popular and
frequently used gathering places by the early
Italian immigrants. (the Roman Hall was not
constructed until the late 30's). The hall featured
a balcony and many were the weddings and showers
that took place there. As little kids, it was a
big thrill to see the bride and groom step out on
the balcony and listen to the music. Nardi's made
one of the most delicious Itaian birthday and
wedding cakes in the area. The section of the
Burg around Emory, Roebling, Division & Anderson
was predominantly made up of immigrants from
Central Italy as opposed to the area near St.
Joachim's (Butler, Elmer, Bayard & Mott) wich
was mostly from the area of Naples. We were the
"Romans" ! On a personal note,my grandparents
first lived in one apartment in that building
before buying a home across the street and
my parents held their wedding reception in
Nardi's Hall back in 1929. In 1958 when my
beautiful wife arrived from Italy with her
parents, they too lived the first few years
in one of those apartments. That is how we met.
I guess you're sorry you asked!, Carlo

Thank You Carlo:)

HI AGAIN MAC AND CARLO....YOU GUYS ARE REALLY GOING BACK NOW. OUR FIRST APARTMENT AFTER WE GOT MARRIED WAS AT NARDI'S ON THE FIRST FLOOR, IN 1940' WE WERE PAYING $18 A MONTH FOR A I BEDROOM APT. I WAS WORKING NIGHTS AT THE POST OFFICE AND HAD TROUBLE SLEEPING DURING THE DAY CAUSE THE KIDS WERE MAKING TOO MUCH NOISE. IT WAS VERY NICE TO HAVE THE STORE AND BAKERY THERE. WE WERE LIVING WITH MY MOTHER ON FRANKLIN ST. TILL THEN.
