Gino Formaroli Talks About Carnivals In The Burg Area

We had a very unique, and distinct privlidge to have lived in
such a neighborhood as Chambersburg, and the Carnival Season,
(Holy Cross, St Stan's, St Joachims, St. Anthony's and A few
others beside Immaculate) was the height of summer, we
planned our social calender around it, not just the kids but
the Adults too. all that is left now is the three day festival
out at mercer county park, (which is fun) but it lacks that
"feel' of hearing the PA from your back porch, and of course
smelling the food cooking in the summer air as you and the
family walked down the street to get there...

Hi Mack: Speaking of Carnivals, most of the guys in the
Burg looked forward to those in the Township. All the good
dancers and music lovers listened to some of the best.
Louie Prima, Charlie Barnett, Russ Morgan, McFarland Twins
and Ted Lewis. The Carnivals were held by Holy Angels and
the Volunteer Fire Companies. The guys paid ten cents a
dance and they must have done well cause they also had
Bunny Berrigan, the best trumpet player of the time. Most
of the good dancers belonged to the Jersey Social Cbub in
the Burg. This was all in the late 30s, so there's not
many around who remember. It's like Gino said, Carnivals
were one more thing we enjoyed in the days gone by.
