The Acme on Roebling Avenue, The Burg

The Acme on Roebling Avenue, The Burg
This was one of the supermarkets within walking distance
in my Burg day. The other one was the Liberty Thriftway.
I know that in prior days there was an A&P on Beatty
and thats about all I know of Burg area supermarkets
back in the day:)

UPDATE

Ralph Lucarella adds...
HI MAC.....THAT CORNER CERTAINLY WAS PRETTY BUSY SINCE
THE HEWITT SCHOOL WAS THERE. I THINK IT ENDED UP AS A
STATE OFFICE DEPT. THE CLOSEST SUPER MARKET I COULD
RECALL WAS ON CHAMBERS AND TIOGA, I THINK. THE GIANT
TIGER WAS THE START OF THEM ALL. REGARDS.

Ralph, wasn't the Giant Tiger out on Nottingham Way and Hamilton? I can remember going there with my Uncle in perhaps the early 1950's. It was a big deal because I got to ride in a car. The other Giant Tiger was on Calhoun, later to become Shop Rite.

THE GIANT TIGER WAS THE START OF THE SUPER MARKETS. MY GOOD FRIEND LARRY LAURENTI ENDED UP OWNING MOST OF THE SHOP RITE MARKETS IN THE AREA. WE WERE KIDS IN THE VILLA PARK AREA WHERE HIS FATHER HAD A BUTCHER SHOP ON THE CORNER OF COLUMBUS AND ROEBLING AVES. HIS NEPHEW JEFF LAURENTI WAS A MAJOR MEMBER OF THE UNITED NATIONS ASSEMBY IN NEW YORK.

hey Ralph, when I moved from Roebling Ave to Nottingham way, we use to shop at the Larry's Shop Rite often. He was a nice and personable man. We use to shop at his dad's also when living in the Burg.Regarding the Acme, the property was changed to state offices I believe in 1963/64.
Best regards
