Winter Skies Over Brown Street, Franklin Park

Winter Skies Over Brown Street, Franklin Park
We lived at 824 Liberty Street in the Burg. Liberty
Street folks had to move their cars off the street
if it snowed. When we were under Winter Storm Watch
we all moved our cars here to Brown Street.
My Dad would have his car closest to Dayton Street
or on Dayton Street near Brown Street.
After you dug your car out you used garbage buckets
to keep your spot. The two snowstorms that left the
biggest impression on me were the Blizzard of '78
which was over a foot of snow followed by a bit of
rain on top which then froze (and made the city streets
a skating rink and gave us a week off from school at
Trenton High), and of course the Mother of All Snowstorms
the Blizzard of '96, the storm of the Century.
Winter weather in the Trenton area varies greatly from year
to year. Some winters little snow at all, some winters a
bunch of storms, and the occasional blizzard.
There is a big difference between powdery snow and wet
snow. Powdery snow you could almost just broom off your
sidewalk unless it was deep, wet snow could require a shovel
and an ice breaker. But a new fallen snow sure made the
Burg look pretty. Especially in the Christmas Seasons of
long ago:)

Mack: I think Trenton must be the only city that does the bucket thing, I wrote about it in my book, I know we did it on Revere Ave. too.

I have seen it in other NJ cities.

Many areas have "quirks" and for instance below Trenton/Bordentown, it is common to see folks parked the wrong way on residential streets. That will get you a ticket in the north.

Many Hispanic towns in the north like Paterson, have the Christmas lights left up all year.

I wish I taken notes when I was on the road all over the state.

HI MAC....WHEN I WAS A KID IN THE 20'S AND 30'S IT SEMMS LIKE THERE WAS SNOW ON THE GROUND ALL WINTER LONG. WE LIKED THAT CAUSE IT GAVE US A CHANCE TO MAKE A FEW BUCKS SHOVELING SIDEWALKS FOR 25 CENTS. LATTER ON WHEN WE LIVED ON EDINBURG ROAD I TOOK MOVIES OF SOME PRETTY VIOLENT STORMS IN THE 50'S. BUT IT WAS LIKE YOU SAID SOME WINTERS WERE WORSE THAN OTHERS. BEST REGARDS.

Hi JoeZ & Skip:)

Trenton also has some blocks, especially south Trenton, that are
almost all 12.6x100 Row homes.
Take Adeline Street's first block from Liberty Street. This means
if they are dropping Grandma or the Kids off at the house and there is no parking..which is often the case... they MUST stop and block the road. I always had
understanding for their situation when I was blocked by them. We all have to bend a bit to make a city work and get along:)

Mack, what I mean is that if you pull up to your house and it's on the left side of the street, simple, you park. You are now parked for the night facing the wrong way. We did that occasionally in Trenton and it was no big deal. South in places like Mapleshade and such, it is the norm. Up in Montclair however that will get you a ticket.

Mack: The problem is people don't have patience any longer. Everything irrates them. Look at all the road rage etc. Courtesy was lost years ago one can only hope it returns one day. But there are still good hearted people out there.

In CA, drivers are not hip to "alternate merge." Out here its every man for themselves. No courtesy on the road.
