Mayor Art Holland
A post found on the internet said..
I'd like to mention another great mayor who existed before
the Internet age, Arthur Holland was mayor of Trenton, N.J.
through much of the 1960s and 1970s and 1980s. He was
nicknamed "Honest Art" because he was so, well, honest.
He made sure contractors fulfilled their contracts, he
didn't take contributions from people out to make hay
from the city and he was so completely open to newspaper
reporters that if a reporter showed up in his outer
office, he or she could just walk into whatever was
going on in his office. Really, just walk in! I was a
reporter for the Trentonian newspaper and twice walked
into metings with developers. As soon as Art introduced
me, the developer got up and walked out. Obviously they
were after some kind of crooked payback. The homeless
often showed up in his office and he would do whatever
he could for them, even taking money out of his own
pocket if need be, and he was the father of six children.
He was famous for going out and measuring the depth of
the asphalt that a road contractor laid down on a city
road and other similar things. Art Holland was one of
a kind.

IT'S ME AGAIN MAC....I'D LIKE TO ADD A FEW THINGS ABOUT ART HOLLAND. TO HIS FRIENDS AND TEAM MATES HE WAS CALLED "CHIRP". HE PLAYED OUTFIELD ON OUR TEAM IN THE CITY TWI-LIGHT LEAGUE IN 1937. OUR MANAGER'S WIFE USED TO BAKE PIES AND CAKES FOR GUYS WHO HIT TRIPLES AND HOME RUNS. WELL ART USED TO STOP ON 3RD BASE WHEN HE HIT A LONG BALL CAUSE HE PREFERRED HER PIES OVER THE CAKES. HE REALLY WAS SERIOUS ABOUT BECOMING A PRIEST IN HIS YOUNGER DAYS. HE WAS OUTSTANDING AT TRENTON CATHOLIC IN SPORTS. REGARDS.
Hi Ralph:)
I love this story:)
Do you remember your managers name
and the name of the Team?
Best regards
Mack:)
OUR MANAGER WAS JACK DOUDIGAN, HE LIVED ON SOUTHARD STREET AND CALLED THE TEAM SOUTHARDS. WE STARTED WITH HIM AS JUNIORS AND GRADUALLY PLAYED IN OLDER LEAGUES. HE BOUGHT US UNIFORMS AND ALL THE OTHER EQUIPMENT AND LOVED MANAGING. CHIRP HOLLAND AND A FEW OTHER TRENTON CATHOLIC PLAYERS ALSO PLAYED WITH US.
