The owner George John Gazonas was born in Salonika,
Greece on April 24, 1917. Son of the late John and
Olga Zekou Gazonas, He immigrated to the United
States via Argentina when he was five years old.
George was raised in Bordentown and attended Bordentown
Regional High School, Class of 1936. In 1939, his family
moved to Trenton where they opened the well-known
Hamilton Sweet Shop. In 1940, he was drafted into the
U.S. Army where he trained as a bombardier and artillery
man. During World War II, he served in the Pacific Island
campaigns, New Guinea and Luzerne. Upon returning from the
service, he ran the luncheonette with his brother Jimmy.
He was an avid tennis player and a member of St. George
Greek Orthodox Church and the AHEPA. In 1947, George
married Sophie Fortosis and remained happily married
for 57 years.
