Fall Comes To South Clinton Avenue, The Burg

Fall Comes To South Clinton Avenue, The Burg
This is a new picture I took on my latest Burg Picture
Walk. Leaves on the ground with their nice colors
swirling lazily in the autumnal breezes:)

HI MAC... THIS LOOKS LIKE THE CORNER OF SO. CLINTON AND ROEBLING. MY SISTER LAW LIVED ACROSS THE STREET WITH JOE BODNER AND HIS SERVICE STATION WAS A BLOCK DOWN ON SO. CLINTON, SJ SHOULD KNOW THIS BLOCK VERY WELL. BEST REGARDS.

Ralph and Mack, that was our old turf, for sure.

Looks like the pic was taken from in front of what was Mercer Confectionary, formerly owned by John Kovach. They sold penny candy, comic books, Life and Look Magazine, sodas, milk, Breyer's Ice Cream (hand dipped), cigars, cigarrettes, Trentonians in the morning and Trenton Evening Times later in the day.

I think Marge and Joe Bodnar lived close by - one or two doors away.

Clinton Hardware was in the immediate right corner. Our Calvary Baptist Church was across Roebling. The church used too have a slate roof and a small steeple. There was no carrilon in my day, just a couple of speakers that could ring bells but rarely did.

Off in the distance is what was the Magyar Baptist Church.

Across S. Clinton from Calvary Baptist was what was a jewelry store.

In the 50s, the S. Clinton was torn up to remove the cobblestone remnanats of the trolley tracks.

A lot of sentiment left behind. Cobblestones, originally came over from Europe in the holds of ships as ballast, hence "Belgian Block", when I moved to Washington Crossing, I paved the walks with New York Avenue Belgian blocks. The city repaved and the contractor left hundreds scattered along the road. With permission, I hauled them away and though I moved, I took a bit of Trenton with me.

Hi Everyone:)
So many memories on one Street.
I have mine too. Toms Record Shop
was a hangout and Stans Deli was
next door to get a Kerns Soda.
The One Food Store just off Clinton
where Whittaker meets it was also a
place I remember well. The Deli across from what was once Bodnars
Station made great Hoagies. Pat Daddio had his This and That shop
near there. The Hobby Shop was on
Beatty & Clinton. The Hat Shop was
around here too....

Caps Hats? When I was a kid, you get used to "Joe's Pizza" or Fred's Auto Repair.

As a kid I thought it was owned by a guy named "Cap" and come to think of it aside from the missing apostrophe it made perfect sense to a kid.

Skip ...... OK, I was a slow kid :)
