Halloween In The Burg

Halloween In The Burg
Halloween in the Burg back in the day. As Burg kids we were
used to walking everywhere and you only needed to go a
couple of blocks to have more than enough candy than you
knew what to do with. Unless kids were really young, parents
did not need to go along and watch them trick or treating as
they were in no danger on the old Burg streets. Well they
might be in danger of getting their face pinched by a
sweet Grandma if their costume was really cute.
Happy Halloween Folks:)

I think it was during the lean years that Mom made my costumes on the sewing machine. I remember Dad being off looking for work out West. Some of the plants were shutting doors. People forget that Curtis Wright had a plant where QB Mall sits.

It was a horrible Halloween. I wanted to be like in the Army or something and she made me a costume as a monk or priest. All the other guys had some stuff that was scary, military or cool. How cool is it to be a monk?

The following year she cut down an old Navy uniform for me and I was in my glory. Still have a pic of that when she was fitting it. I was standing on a chair and the legs touched the floor.

Sad, my kids are gone. I miss them coming in with the sacks of goodies.

does anyone remember when all the store windows in downtown Trenton were painted with Halloween scenes by the kids from different schools, that was nice, then they had the Halloween parade down town, it's a shame that Trenton died....

Hey, it's Halloween 24/7/365 now.

Boo! Gotcha! And, yes I fell for one of those "click here" things expecting to see a little ballerina in a thing someone sent me. It was some screaming head and of course I fell for the "turn up the volume" trick. What a treat, cleaning the screen of coffee at 6 in the morning.

Again, a Mischief Night shout out to "Chickie C of Paul Avenue in the "Little Burg". He had the unique ability to write very rapidly backwards in soap on peoples doors and would ring the bell and run on mischief night. Chickie, you were a legend. I hope you are well where ever you are.

When I was in the marching band at Trenton High, we played in the Halloween Parade. It was actually on Halloween Night. After the parade we got back to THS and went treat or treating in our band uniforms along Hamilton Ave. That was the last time I trick or treated!...1967 or 1968.

Got a pic of Noel Vento in uniform in 1968.

I lost my yearbook for 67 but have a 68.

Bobashela was like "friendship" in Lenne Lenape?

Skip,
I was in the band '67,'68 and '69.
I still have my Bobashela from '69.

Noel, if at all possible would you be willing to do a bit of trading. I really need a 1967 and would be willing to pay for it. Additionally I would of course throw in the 1968 that I have. Or, would it be possible for me to borrow your 1967 in order to make a copy and once again, you are welcome to the 1968.

Skip,
I only have the 1969 copy. I didn't buy any for my undergrad years. Sorry.

Noel, thanks anyway. Somehow my 67' got lost in a move. Kind of sad with things like classmates.com and such when you get a visit and do not recognize the name a look a the book brings it all back.

It was kind of neat seeing you in the band photo. The other fellow, Derek went on to record a few tracks with Ringo Starr. He was with a local band called The Trees and then Brother .. with his brother.

You must be talking of the Van Eatons - Lon and Derek. They were also members of the bad "Jacob's Creek" that played many times at Murphy's Chuckwagon in Ewing.

They came close to "making it" but were a little too freaky to break outside of the Trenton / Philly market, iirc.

Bill, did Murphy's become Brehiler's Dairy Bar on Olden?

I knew the name but can't picture it except for letters made of a yellow rope on the sign.

Mack .. sorry to carry this on but one memory seems to spark another.

Murphy's was originally Murphy's Chckwagon, on the SW corner of Prospect and Olden. In the mid-60s they traded property with a liquor store that was on the NE corner. The lot is right next to what was Johnson Oldsmobile. I think Angelo's Foreign Cars was down Prospect (remember Greg Rue?)

Murphy's soon dropped the "Chuckwagon" from the name and became a restaurant / night-spot with clientele being in their early 20s. In the late 60s, it was one of the better music places in town. Bands like "Jacob's Creek", "Cut Glass" and "Alexander Rabbit" were regularly appearing bands in the "Back Room".

You may have been on active duty when the place was really happening. Murph's was the last place in which I saw most of my THS classmates ('64) after I left active duty.

I don't think I ever saw Noel's older sister Vera there though. She was busy up in New York. (Noel, was it Julliard?) BEsiddes. Murphys's was mostly a Red Team hangout.

To keep this entry "on-topic", there were great Halloween Parties in that place.

Some time after I left the area, the building burned down. Currently there is an Eckerd's Drugstore on the site.
