Fall Comes to Wetzel Field (4), Villa Park

Fall Comes to Wetzel Field (4), Villa Park
A view from the outfield looking in on the baseball diamond
at Wetzel Field. Soon the fall weather took away baseball
but it would come back in all its glory in the springtime:)

HI MAC....IT'S STRANGE TO SEE WETZEL FIELD WITHOUT THE BIG GRANDSTAND AND BLEACHERS. IT'S LIKE SEEING SOMEONE NAKED WITHOUT CLOTHES. THAT WAS A BEAUTIFUL SPORTS FACILTY AND I SPENT SO MUCH TIME THERE IN THE 1930'S. THEY AT LEAST LEFT THE CLUB HOUSE THAT CONTAINS THE MANY AWARDS AND CHAMPIONSHIPS OF THE TRENTON SCHROTHS AMERICAN LEGION BALL TEAM. WE EARNED A FEW DOLLARS WATCHING CARS FOR 10 CENTS AND CHASING BALLS THAT WERE HIT OVER THE GRANSTAND. EVERYTHING I LEARNED ABOUT BASEBALL, AND I MIGHT SAY I DID PRETTY GOOD, WAS TAUGHT TO ME BY THE MANY PLAYERS THAT HELPED ME AT THEIR GAMES. SO, WHEN I SEE WETZEL FIELD TODAY, I CAN,T HELP BUT REMEMBER THOSE HAPPY DAYS. BEST REGARDS.

Hi Ralph:)
Yes there are a few things different about Wetzel but the views it offered of the neighborhood beyond the fences remind me of 40 years ago..as do the views at Franklin Park:)
It will always be a field of dreams:)

YOU'RE RIGHT MAC, THE NEIGHBORHOOD REMAINS THE SAME. AT ONE TIME I KNEW THE NAMES OF MOST PEOPLE LIVING ON COMMONWEALTH AND BERT AVES. LIKE THE ANGELINI'S, AND THERE WERE A LOT OF THEM, 5 BOYS. ON BERT THERE WERE THR DeBOSKEY'S, ALL THE PEOPLE AROUND WETZEL WERE ACQQUANTANCES AND THR NICEST YOU WOULD WANT TO KNOW. SO WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT WETZEL, YOU'RE BRINGING BACK MANY UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES. REGARDS.
