Fall Comes to Ashmore Avenue, The Burg

Fall Comes to Ashmore Avenue, The Burg
As Summer faded away, school shopping at Atlantic Mills,
then The Feast of Lights, Then School Returned, Then
The Columbus Day Parade, Then Baseball ended Then
Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day.
Then winter and saving parking spots dug out with
chairs and garabage buckets, Then Spring, Then Easter,
Then Baseball Returned, Then Summer Returned, Then
School let out. Then we went on Family Vacation, Then
we enjoyed Summers stolen days, Then Summer faded away
and we did it all over again:)

I hated Atlantic Mills as a little kid. The redeeming thing about a trip there was visiting a favored Aunt on Jersey Street. It always seemed so big and confused, a jumble of bins that never seemed to make sense and the "back to school" shopping was always done on an August 95 degree day. Lucky me, I got to push that cart up and down those factory ramps. Now, we were never "top drawer" shoppers but by comparison, a trip to Lits, Dunhams or Nevius-Voorhees bargain basement was a treat.

Always, the bargain basement. Horror at 13 was getting directed to the "Husky" section. That was where we fat kids got fitted.

Shopping at Atlantic Mills was fun for me, my granny lived on Home Ave and we would go there in the evenings after supper for an hour or two just walking up the aisles and looking for bargains. Now Willett's they had everything but I loved the toy section down stairs.

Ah! Willet's toy basement. I finally got that toy rifle with the real bolt action. Then a few years later, a real one, along with a Colt sidearm. My draft number was "024".

:)

Mister Urken with the glasses and cigar and his loyal assistant and perhaps son, Howard, tall like a balding stork ran the place.

I wondered it that was the same Urken that was mentioned last week about a business on Broad Street?

HI MAC...THAT PHOTO OF ASHMORE AVE. WITH ALL THOSE CARS PARKED, MAKES YOU WONDER WHAT HAPPENS IN FAMILIES WITH MORE THAN ONE CAR. IN TODAY'S WORLD MOST FAMILIES, ESPECIALLY IN CHAMBERSBURG, HAVE KIDS WITH CARS PLUS THE FAMILY CAR. I'M SURE IT'S A BIG PROBLEM AND A MAJOR REASON FOR PEOPLE IN THE BURG TO MOVE TO THE TOWNSHIPS. IT SURE IS A DIFFERENT SITUATION FROM MY DAYS WHEN WE WALKED TO ALMOST EVERYWHERE WE WERE GOING. WE HAVE A CHANGING WORLD AND I HOPE IT'S FOR THE BETTER. REGARDS

Hi Ralph Skip & JoeZ:)
Urken was Urken & Kohn Triangular
building on Clinton & Division.
The Urken family were part of a few local stores. I will do a post on that.

Burg area parking...
I think South Trenton was worse for parking then the Burg in many places. Blocks of 12.5x100 Rows like Home Avenue. Villa Park after
they built the hospital Parking lot
was better than the Burg for parking. But you are correct part of the deal when you lived in the Burg was sometimes having to park
a block and a half from the house
lol:)
