Swan Street 1920, The Burg

Swan Street 1920, The Burg

1920, when the sun was rising on the new Italian Burg.
The Yankees had just acquired Babe Ruth but there was
no TV or Radio so you had to get a train to the Bronx
to go see him. Papas Tomato Pies had been in business
already for about a decade.Salamandra Liquor Store was
already at its Chestnut Avenue location. About 55
years later I would walk by Salamandra Liquors in the
quiet of the morning delivering papers.
The Roebling Factory was hiring folks and would be
a place for many Burg folks to work for decades.
Ralph Lucarella's Alma Mater Hamilton Elementary
School was on the corner of Hamilton Avenue and
Anderson Street (Where Roma Bank is today located).
Tenth Ward Park was located where Washington School is
today and Washington School was located where the
Old Washington Playground (AKA Agabiti Park) is today.
Roebling School was located at the corner of Roebling
Avenue and Washington Street (where late Acme Market
once was). Many years of greatness were ahead of the
Burg in 1920:)
